WILD TRANSLATION |
"The exhibition UTOPIA AND THE EVERYDAY invites us to consider the field of contemporary art
as a free space to experiment with new learning methods, to see the relationship between the teacher
and the taught in a different light, or to tackle issues that learning institutions do not usually address."

"Wild Translation" is the result of multiple translations: First one being the experiment of trafo.K to
react upon the development of the exhibition during its coming into existence with 13-year old juveniles.
While discussing issues of learning within the institution and space of their own school, seven team-
projects resulted, which were translated in the exhibition architecture into a "workshop / presentation table".
The second architectural part occupies the central row of columns in the gallery: as load-bearing elements,
they are seldom used for an exhibition set-up, rather they are “overlooked” for most of the time. In a more
general architectural context though, columns are extremely under-valued as important parts in the con-
struction of flexible school-buildings. Within the gallery the columns take on the themes of the artistic work
(as discussed with the pupils) by translating them into questions of art mediation in everyday life: How to
talk about feminism, the institution, school, anarchy, breaking the rules, social exclusions, history?
Spacing those questions and pictograms onto spatial figures, which “dance” around the columns, high-
lights the architectural issue of the “wild translation”: the need for “open buildings” as educational spaces,
which can change according to altering pedagogical concepts; in other words: be part of the process of
"wild learning".

Die Ausstellung UTOPIA AND THE EVERYDAY lädt uns ein, das Kunstfeld als freien Raum für Experimente
mit neuen Lernmethoden zu denken. (microsillons)
„Wild Translation“ ist das Ergebnis mehrfacher Übersetzung: Zunächst des Versuchs von trafo.K, mit einer
Gruppe von 13-jährigen Jugendlichen der Deutschen Schule Genf auf die Ausstellung während des Prozesses
ihrer Entstehung zu reagieren. Die Anordnung folgt dabei dem Prinzip der wilden Übersetzung. Die SchülerInnen
übersetzen sieben Arbeiten der Ausstellung, die Ergebnisse dieses Prozesses sind auf einem „Workshop/
Ausstellungstisch“ in der Ausstellung zu sehen.
Der zweite architektonische Teil besetzt die zentrale Säulenreihe der Gallerie: Säulen, die den Raum tragen,
aber selten Teil von Ausstellungen sind, sondern eher meist übersehen werden. Generell werden Säulen als
flexible statische Elemente in der Architektur – vor allem im Schulbau - extrem unterschätzt. Die Säulen im
Ausstellungsraum greifen nun – ausgehend von den Themen der künstlerischen Arbeiten und den Reaktionen
der SchülerInnen – sieben Themen aus der Perspektive der Vermittlung noch einmal auf. Viele Fragen bringen
dabei einige Zweifel zum Ausdruck, die den Alltag kritischer Kunstvermittlung begleiten: Wie sprechen über
Feminismus, Institution, Schule, Anarchie, Regelübertretung, soziale Ausgrenzung, Geschichte?
Die Verortung von Piktogrammen und Fragen aus dem Vermittlungsprozess auf "Figuren, die um die Säulen tanzen"
betonen das architektonische Anliegen der „wilden Übersetzung“: Schulgebäude sollten eher als Kulturbauten
denn als Nutzbauten gesehen werden, als „open buildings“, deren Wände sich mit veränderten pädagogischen
Konzepten mit-bewegen können.
