For the past decades, architects have been ridiculed for trying to deal with ecological issues, but today, due
to the rise in questions regarding peak oil and a real energy crisis, the idea of "green building" has suddenly
acquired tremendous significance. There is an inflationary use of terms such as sustainability and ecology. In
this text, as well as in my teaching in the Platform Ecology Sustainability Conservation at the Academy of Fine
Arts Vienna, I use "environment" in Reyner Banham's meaning of the word: as being the space we inhabit and
temper by architecture. I also use the term "ecology", provided, however, that ecology is understood as
extending beyond mere environmentalism.
